International Qualifications Assessment

Registration to teach in Tasmania is required to apply for teaching roles in Tasmanian schools and colleges.

If you studied to be a teacher overseas, the TRB must assess your international qualifications to determine if they meet the requirements for teacher registration in Tasmania.

This assessment is required before you can apply for registration unless you hold a valid AITSL Skills Assessment (valid for two years from the date of issues) or are currently registered elsewhere in Australia or New Zealand.

The assessment ensures your tertiary qualifications:

  • meets the qualification criteria for teacher registration
  • is at an appropriate academic level (Bachelor level or higher)

AND ensures the Initial Teacher Education (ITE) qualification:

  • is comparable to an ITE program
  • includes teacher preparation studies
  • includes supervised professional experience (teaching practicum)
  • was completed at a recognised higher education institution.

We recommend using the Eligibility Self-Assessment for ITE qualification to ensure you meet the qualification criteria before applying for an assessment.

If you believe you meet the qualification criteria, please apply for the international qualifications assessment in TRB Online

Important Notes

  • Subject degrees alone (e.g. science, music) without a teaching qualification generally do not meet registration requirements.
  • School-based training pathways are not recognised.
  • TESOL, TEFL, CELTA or short-course English teaching certificates generally are not recognised teaching qualifications.
  • Assessments from other Australian states/territories and New Zealand are not automatically accepted.
  • Assessments from overseas regulatory authorities are not recognised.
