FAQs -Overseas Teacher
If any of your original documents are in a language other than English, you must provide certified copies of these documents in the original language and translations that are prepared and certified as correct by an official service or an accredited translator.
You may be requested to post the physical certified copies to:

Alternatively, bring your original documents to our office and we will make a certified a copy for our records.
If your assessment confirms you meet the Board’s qualification requirements, you may apply for teacher registration in Tasmania.
Applicants for registration must also meet the following additional eligibility criteria:
- Be of good character and a fit and proper person to teach.
- Meet the minimum English language proficiency requirements.
- Hold a current registration to work with vulnerable people, also known as Working with Vulnerable People Registration.
You will need to provide a Letter of Professional Standing from your most recent regulatory authority or employer to support the registration application.
The international qualifications assessment will also determine whether you meet the English language proficiency requirements.
Applicants who have completed at least four years of tertiary study, including a recognised teaching qualification, in recognised countries may automatically meet the English language requirement.
If you do not meet the requirement, English language proficiency can be demonstrated through the IELTS assessment:
International English Language Testing System (IELTS) academic assessment requires:
- a score of at least 8 in speaking and listening
- a score of at least 7 in reading and writing
- an average band score of at least 7.5 across all four skill areas, listening, speaking, reading, and writing

An international qualifications assessment generally takes 6 to 8 weeks to process.
However, it is not unusual for some applications to take up to 10 weeks to complete. We may need to contact regulatory authorities in other jurisdictions for assistance with assessing international qualifications and related documents, which can create delays.
