Initial Teacher Education (ITE) Accreditation
To become a teacher in Australia, you must complete an ITE program in primary or secondary teaching. These programs must be accredited by a teacher regulatory authority.
Accredited ITE programs meet national standards, ensuring that graduates are well prepared for the classroom and have the skills to support student learning and wellbeing.
Important: Qualifications focused solely on early childhood education (birth to 5 years) do not meet the requirements for teacher registration in Tasmania.
ITE programs in Tasmania
The TRB accredits all ITE programs offered in the state. The following programs, delivered by the University of Tasmania (UTAS), are currently accredited by the Board:
- Master of Teaching (Primary)
- Master of Teaching (Secondary)
- Bachelor of Education (Primary)
- Bachelor of Education (Health and Physical Education)
Studying outside Tasmania
If you’re considering studying outside Tasmania, you can search for accredited programs across Australia using the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL) Accredited Program Search Tool. Please check course details with the provider to ensure that the program meets registration requirements.
Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Education (LANTITE)
The LANTITE assesses whether teaching students have the literacy and numeracy skills needed for the profession.
If you are enrolled in an ITE program, undergraduate or postgraduate, you must achieve the required standard in LANTITE before you can graduate.
