Recognition of Interstate and NZ Registration
Registration to teach in Tasmania is required to be employed in teaching roles in Tasmanian schools and colleges.
If you currently hold teacher registration in Australia or in New Zealand, you may be eligible to apply for registration to teach in Tasmania under the Mutual Recognition Act 1992 or the Trans-Tasman Mutual Recognition Act 1997.
Eligibility Critera
- Currently hold teacher registration in any state or territories in Australia or New Zealand.
- Have a current Tasmanian Registration to Work with Vulnerable People (RWVP) – you can commence your MR application using an RWVP application number if your RWVP has not yet been approved.
- Be of good character and fit to teach.
1. Teacher Registration in recognised jurisdictions
Mutual recognition provisions only apply for equivalent occupations and where Tasmania has an equivalent category of teacher registration (full or provisional registration for the school sector). The TRB recognises full and provisional registration for the school sector from these regulatory authorities:
- Education Council of Aotearoa New Zealand
- Teacher Registration Board of the Northern Territory
- Teachers Registration Board of South Australia
- Queensland College of Teachers
- Teachers Registration Board of Western Australia
- Australian Capital Territory Teacher Quality Institute
- Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT)*
- New South Wales Education Standards Authority (NESA)**
Early Childhood Teacher (ECT) Registration
ECT registration is not currently required to teach in non-school early childhood education and care settings in Tasmania.
*VIT has two separate registers: early childhood teachers and registered teachers. Tasmania does not currently have an equivalent “early childhood teacher” registration category and this category of registration is not currently recognised under mutual recognition in Tasmania.
**NESA accreditation for working with children ages birth to five years and preschool only allows you to work with children in these age groups. NESA has confirmed this type of accreditation does not enable you to teach in a school setting.
2. Registration to Work with Vulnerable People
All applicants are required to hold current Tasmanian Registration to Work with Vulnerable People (RWVP).
If you need to apply for RWVP, please visit the Tasmanian Government’s Registration to Work with Vulnerable People (RWVP) website.
Applying for a RWVP can take a few weeks, so you should apply as soon as possible to limit any delay to approval of your teacher registration.
3. Good character and fitness to teach
In order to maintain public confidence in the teaching profession, teachers are to be of good character and fit to teach.
Applicants will be asked to complete a number of declarations regarding any matters which may impact their fitness to teach.
To assist with this assessment, a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check (or international check if relevant) will be undertaken as part of your application.

Your registration in your home jurisdiction must be current at the time you apply for registration under mutual recognition and must remain current until you are granted substantive registration in Tasmania.

Proof of Identity
The Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission (ACIC) requires evidence that proof of identity documents belong to an applicant where a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check is being sought.
This can be completed in your TRB Online account during the application process using biometric technology to take a selfie and compare it to your photo identification.

RWVP Details
Have your RWVP card number (or application number) ready at the online application step.
Proof of Current Registration
- In all Jurisdictions – Provide evidence of ALL current registrations with the recognised jurisdictions – certificate* showing the jurisdiction, applicant name, registration number, registration category, and expiry date.
*If you hold a current accreditation with NESA, please also include your NESA Statement of Accreditation/Summary Report and your payment receipt from “eTASMs Help’ confirming fees are current.
Payment is to be made as part of the online application prior to submitting.
Fees are not subject to pro-rata arrangements and are paid in full for the calendar year to which they relate, regardless of when an application is made.
