Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check

All applicants and registered teachers must provide consent for the Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check (NCCHC) as part of an application for teacher registration, Limited Authority to Teach, renewal, reapplication, and ongoing registration with the Teachers Registration Board of Tasmania (TRB Tasmania).

The TRB Tasmania may conduct an NCCHC when you apply for registration, at least once every five (5) years during your registration period, and at any other time where it is required to assess your ongoing suitability to teach.

The purpose of these checks is to assist the TRB Tasmania in determining whether a person is suitable to be registered and remain registered as a teacher in Tasmania.

The TRB Tasmania will periodically seek your consent and may require you to confirm or update the personal information used to conduct these checks.

What is a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check?

A Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check is conducted with your Informed Consent to determine your suitability for employment, a position of trust or as required by legislation. A Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check contains your Personal Information including any relevant Police Information about you according to the purpose of your Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check.

How will my information be used?

The ACIC and Australian Police Agencies:

The ACIC and Australian police agencies use the information provided in the application and the Applicant’s identity documentation:

to disclose Police Information relating to you to the TRB Tasmania;
to update records held about you; and
for law enforcement, including purposes set out in the Australian Crime Commission Act 2002 (Cth).

Accredited Body:

The Accredited Body, the TRB Tasmania, uses the Personal Information collected in the application to request a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check and to confirm your identity.

The TRB Tasmania has a legislative basis under the Teachers Registration Act 2000 (Tas) to collect, use and disclose Personal Information and Police Information for the purpose of assessing your suitability for teacher registration, Limited Authority to Teach, renewal, reapplication and/or ongoing registration.

How is my National Coordinated Criminal History Check result determined?

Police Information is disclosed in accordance with applicable spent conviction legislation and information release policies of the Australian Government and state and territory governments.

How do I dispute my result?

If you do not agree with the results of your Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check, contact the TRB Tasmania.

Providing incomplete, false or misleading information

You must take reasonable steps to ensure you provide accurate, complete and up-to-date Personal Information. Withholding and/or providing misleading, or false information may be a Commonwealth offence, and you may be prosecuted under the Criminal Code Act 1995 (Cth).

If you become aware you have provided incorrect information you must contact the TRB Tasmania as soon as possible.

What is Informed Consent?

Your Informed Consent is needed before we can request a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check (NCCHC) for you.

Your Informed Consent means you:

have read and understood the information provided in the application about how your Personal Information and any Police Information relevant to you will be handled and disclosed
provide your permission for us to request a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check on your behalf

How do I provide my Informed Consent?

An important aspect of providing informed consent is that you understand what you are consenting to. It is important that you read the consent statements and, where required, get clarification from the TRB Tasmania, to ensure complete understanding.

As part of the online application process, you will be asked to read the consent statement below and then provide your informed consent by ticking the checkbox provided.

Applicant’s informed consent to submit a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check

I, as the applicant to the TRB Tasmania

acknowledge that I/the Applicant am aware that I/the Applicant am providing consent for a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check to be conducted using all Personal Information and identity documents provided to the TRB Tasmania in the application.
acknowledge that the TRB Tasmania is collecting information in the application to provide to the ACIC and police agencies, for a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check to be conducted for the purpose of teacher registration.
understand that the purpose of collecting this information is to conduct a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check and assess your suitability to teach and hold teacher registration throughout the period of my registration with the TRB Tasmania.
acknowledge that the personal information collected and disclosed for the purpose of conducting a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check may include:
- your current and previous names
- date and place of birth
- gender
- contact details
- residential addresses for the previous five years
- identity documents and related information
- any other information required to verify your identity and process the check
acknowledge that failure to provide the required information or consent may result in your application being incomplete and may prevent the TRB Tasmania from processing or determining your application.
give consent to Police Information relating to me/the Applicant, being disclosed in accordance with the purpose teacher registration, and applicable legislation and information release policies (including spent convictions legislation described in Australian Government and state or territory legislation).
acknowledge that it is usual practice for my/the Applicant’s Personal Information (including Police Information) to be used by police agencies and the ACIC for law enforcement, including purposes set out in the Australian Crime Commission Act 2002 (Cth).
have fully and accurately provided all Personal Information within the application to the TRB Tasmania, and the Personal Information I/the Applicant, have provided relates to me/the Applicant.
acknowledge that withholding and/or providing misleading or false information in the application and in any supplied identity documents may be a Commonwealth offence and may lead to prosecution under the Criminal Code Act 1995 (Cth).
acknowledge that any information sent electronically, in relation to the application, including identity documents, is sent at my/the Applicant’s risk and I/the Applicant, am aware of the consequences of sending information in these ways.
give consent to the TRB Tasmania verifying the identity documents that I/the Applicant supplied using an Authoritative Source.
give consent to the TRB Tasmania Body providing the document identifiers of the documents that I/the Applicant supplied to the ACIC for the purpose of the ACIC using the DVS to verify my/the Applicant’s identity documents.
give consent to the ACIC using the document identifiers of the documents that I/the Applicant supplied to verify my/the Applicant’s identity documents using the DVS.
give consent to the ACIC and police agencies using and disclosing my/the Applicant’s Personal Information that I/the Applicant, have provided in the application to the TRB Tasmania, Personal Information contained in my supplied identity documents and all other available Personal Information relating to me/the Applicant, to conduct a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check.
give consent to the ACIC disclosing the Police Information sourced from the police agencies to other approved bodies and the TRB Tasmania.
give consent to the TRB Tasmania disclosing my/the Applicant’s Personal Information (including Police Information) to the TRB Tasmania’s contractors for the purpose of conducting a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check.
acknowledge that I/the Applicant have read and understand the information on this form.
