Eligibility for Registration

To be eligible for teacher registration in Tasmania you will need to meet the following criteria:

have completed an approved, accredited initial primary and/or initial secondary teaching qualification
have a current registration to work with vulnerable people (RWVP)
be of good character and fit to teach
meet minimum English language proficiency requirements.

1. Qualification Requirements for Registration

School Sector Registration

To be eligible for teacher registration you must hold an accredited initial teacher education (ITE) course. Alternatively, you must hold an equivalent qualification(s) (previously accredited), or comparable qualification(s) from overseas*.

An accredited teaching qualification (ITE):

prepares students to be teachers (primary or secondary)
contains general education studies
contains discipline-specific curriculum and pedagogical studies
includes professional experiences in a school setting.

Your qualifications must be awarded by a higher education institution and equate to a minimum of four years of full-time tertiary, academic study. If you completed your teaching degree as a postgraduate, you must also provide evidence of your undergraduate degree. The professional experience components of an ITE program must consist of supervised and assessed teaching practice undertaken over a substantial and sustained period, in a recognised school setting.

*If you studied to be a teacher overseas, your qualifications must be assessed by the Board before you apply for registration, to ensure that they compare to Australian accredited initial teacher education programs. The assessment will also determine whether you meet the English language proficiency requirements. Please note that school-based programs do not satisfy the qualification requirements for teacher registration in Tasmania.

Specialist VET Registration

To be eligible for registration to teach Vocational Education and Training (VET) subjects in Tasmanian schools and colleges, you must hold one of the following:

Current qualification (Certificate IV) established by the Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA) for trainers and assessors in the VET sector and relevant professional experience, or
A relevant diploma or higher-level qualification in adult education (as determined by the Board) on a case-by-case basis and relevant professional experience.

Early Childhood Registration

Please note that teacher registration is not required in Tasmania for teachers in National Quality Framework early childhood education and care settings at this time.

Teachers with Early Childhood (0-5) qualifications are not currently eligible for teacher registration in Tasmania.

Early Childhood Teacher registration in ECEC settings is currently being progressed nationally. Further information about early childhood teacher registration and accreditation is available on the ACECQA website.

2. Registration to Work with Vulnerable People

All applicants are required to hold current Registration to Work with Vulnerable People (RWVP).

Tasmanian teachers must ensure their RWVP remains up to date.

Applying for a RWVP can take a few weeks, so you should apply as soon as possible to limit any delay to approval of your teacher registration. Applicants must record their RWVP details in their TRB Online account.

RWVP status is automatically validated by the Department of Justice.

3. Good character and fitness to teach

In order to maintain public confidence in the teaching profession, teachers are to be of good character and fit to teach.

Applicants will be asked to complete a number of declarations regarding any matters which may impact their fitness to teach.

For further information, please refer to our Eligibility page. To assist with this assessment, a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check (or international check if relevant) will be undertaken as part of your application.

4. English language proficiency

All applicants must have a level of English proficiency that enables them to communicate in English at a professional level with students, parents, colleagues, and other education professionals.

You will meet this requirement if you have completed four years of higher education in any of these countries:

Australia
Republic of Ireland
Canada (where tertiary studies were completed in English)
United Kingdom (England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales)
New Zealand
United States of America

If you do not automatically meet this requirement, English language proficiency can be demonstrated through the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) assessment:

IELTS academic assessment requires:
- an average band score of at least 7.5 across all four skill areas (listening, speaking, reading, and writing)
- a score of at least 8 in speaking and listening
- no score below 7 in any of the four skill areas.

Please Note

The English language proficiency assessment must have occurred no more than two years prior to the date that your application for registration is submitted.

IELTS One Skill Retake enables you to retake any one component of the test (listening, reading, writing or speaking) if you need to improve in one area, without redoing all four sections. You may take an IELTS One Skill Retake if needed. Otherwise, the required scores must be obtained in one test. An exemption from completing an English language test may be considered in exceptional circumstances.
