Types of Registration

The type of registration granted to a teacher is determined by the Board, based on the person’s qualifications and other aspects of their application.

Registration for the school sector

Full and provisional registration together comprise one category of registration for the school sector. These types of registration recognise the qualifications, teaching experience, and competencies of teachers who are trained to teach students from kindergarten through to the final year of college.

Full Registration

The Board grants this type of registration based on:

  • appropriate teaching qualifications and experience
  • assessment of teaching competence
  • assessment that the person is of good character and fit to teach
  • assessment that the person can communicate in English at a professional level
  • evidence that the person participates in professional learning to build knowledge, skill, and competence.

A teacher with full registration has demonstrated their practice at the proficient career stage of the Teacher Standards.

Provisional Registration

The Board grants this type of registration based on:

  • appropriate teaching qualifications (or the ability to gain them)
  • assessment that the person is of good character and fit to be a teacher
  • assessment that the person can communicate in English at a professional level.

A teacher with provisional registration has not yet met the requirements for full registration. Usually due to the length or relevance of their teaching experience and/or because the teacher has not yet completed the process of progressing to full registration.

Teachers with provisional registration will have conditions on their registration. The conditions will reflect the individual reason/s for granting provisional registration. The teacher must meet these conditions to progress to full registration.

Registration for the Vocational Education and Training sector

Teachers employed in schools and colleges to deliver vocational education and training (VET) programs, including foundation or prerequisite courses for vocational pathways,  may hold Specialist Vocational Education and Training Registration (SpVET). This type of registration recognises the qualifications, teaching experience, and competencies of teachers working in the VET sector.

The Board grants SpVET registration based on the criteria set in place by the Board as the standard required of VET teachers in Tasmania.

Dual Registration

The Board grants Dual Registration to recognise teachers with broad qualifications suitable for both the school and the VET sectors. Therefore some Tasmanian teachers hold SpVET registration and Provisional Registration, or SpVET Registration and Full Registration.

Early Childhood

Tasmanian kindergartens are part of Tasmanian schools and as such kindergarten teachers are required to hold teacher registration. Check here for your eligibility for registration.

Registration is not required for early childhood teachers in National Quality Framework settings that are not kindergartens or schools. Further information about early childhood teacher registration and accreditation is available on the ACECQA website.

Overseas Qualifications

If you studied to be a teacher overseas, the Board must assess your qualifications to determine if they are comparable to Australian-accredited initial teacher education programs and meet Board requirements.

This assessment is undertaken as part of your application for registration.
