Registration to teach in Tasmania is required to apply for teaching roles in Tasmanian schools and colleges.

If you studied to be a teacher overseas, the Board must assess your qualifications to determine if they are comparable to Australian-accredited initial teacher education programs and meet Board requirements.

This assessment is undertaken as part of your application for registration.

Before you apply…

Do you meet all four of the below qualification criteria?

To be eligible for teacher registration in Tasmania you must meet all four of the qualification criteria listed below:

1) A teaching qualification that meets the following requirements:

a) Prepares students to be teachers
b) Contains general education studies
c) Contains discipline-specific curriculum and pedagogical studies
d) Includes sufficient professional experiences in a school setting

2) A conferred degree equivalent to four years of full-time study:

You must hold a conferred degree(s) awarded by a higher education institution(s) and that equates to four years of (full-time equivalent) tertiary study.

3) A pattern of tertiary study that aligns with one of these requirements:

The Board may recognise any of the following higher education qualifications (a degree awarded by a higher education institution) for teacher registration:

a) Other national and international four-year undergraduate initial teacher education (ITE) programs assessed as comparable to those currently approved by the Board.

b) Other national and international two-year graduate entry or postgraduate ITE programs assessed as comparable to that currently approved by the Board, combined with the equivalent of a suitable three-year undergraduate degree (minimum).

c) Other national and international one-year graduate entry or postgraduate ITE programs assessed as comparable to those currently approved by other Australian regulatory authorities or the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership, combined with the equivalent of a suitable three-year undergraduate degree (minimum).

d) Other national and international programs of teacher education, as the Board may determine in a particular case, where the applicant has tertiary qualifications that are assessed as being equivalent to a four-year degree (minimum) when combined with the teacher education programs.

4) The professional experience components of your ITE program are sufficient and evidenced

The professional experience components (practicum) of an ITE program must consist of supervised and assessed teaching practice undertaken over a substantial and sustained period, in a recognised school setting.

The professional experiences must be as diverse as possible and provide opportunities for pre-service teachers to observe and participate purposefully in a school/site as early in the program as is practical. Sufficient professional experience is:

  • at least 80 days in a four-year undergraduate or double-degree ITE program
  • at least 60 days in a two-year graduate entry or postgraduate ITE program
  • at least 45 days in a one-year graduate entry or postgraduate ITE program.

The professional experience component of your ITE program must be evidenced by a letter from the awarding university (not a teaching college if affiliated). The letter must provide details of the professional experience undertaken as part of the course and include:

  • the name of the ITE program
  • the name of the school(s), location, level (e.g., primary/secondary), and grade where you undertook the professional experience
  • the total number of days that involved directly teaching students in the school(s).

In addition to qualification requirements, to be eligible for registration, applicants must:

  • be of good character and fit to teach
  • provide a Letter of Professional standing from your most recent regulatory authority or employer
  • meet minimum English Language Proficiency requirements, and
  • have a current registration to work with vulnerable people

You will also need to provide a Letter of Professional standing to confirm your verified teaching qualifications, registration history, and character. This must be emailed directly to trb@trb.tas.gov.au by your registration authority (or if no registration authority, your most recent employer).

Fees

In addition to the general application and annual registration fee, an additional fee is payable where assessment of overseas qualifications is required as part of an application for registration. See the fees and payments page for more information. Please note application and assessment of qualification fees are non-refundable.

**The Teachers Registration Board Tasmania no longer assess overseas qualifications as a stand-alone service.

An application for registration that requires an assessment of overseas qualifications generally takes six weeks from the time we have all of your correctly certified documentary evidence,  and once the relevant fees are paid.

However, it is not unusual for some applications to take up to eight to ten weeks to complete. We may need to contact regulatory authorities in other jurisdictions for assistance with assessing international qualifications and related documents, which can create delays.

You should only submit your application for registration when you have all the required documentation.

Note: If required documentation has not been received, or payment has not been made, applications are cancelled after four months.
