Initial Teacher Education Programs
Studying to become a teacher
Studying to become a teacher in Australia means undertaking an initial teacher education program (ITE program) accredited by a state or territory teacher regulatory authority. Accredited ITE programs have been assessed using nationally-agreed standards and procedures, to ensure that graduate teachers are classroom-ready and have the skills to make a positive impact on student learning and wellbeing outcomes. Graduates of these programs have achieved the qualification requirements for provisional teacher registration.
The Teachers Registration Board of Tasmania is the accrediting authority for ITE programs offered in Tasmania.
The Board has accredited several ITE programs delivered by the University of Tasmania. These programs include:
- Master of Teaching (Primary)
- Master of Teaching (Secondary)
- Bachelor of Education (Primary)
- Bachelor of Education (Health and Physical Education)
Other ITE programs have been accredited by the Board that are not open to further intake of students:
- Bachelor of Education (Applied Learning)
- Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood)
- Bachelor of Education (Science and Mathematics)
A comprehensive list of accredited ITE programs from across Australia is available through the Australian Institute of Teacher and School Leadership Accredited Teaching Program search tool.
Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education
The Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education (LANTITE) is a national test administered by the Australian Council for Educational Research on behalf of the Australian Government. The test ensures that the literacy and numeracy skills of ITE program graduates are within the top 30 percent of the population. Successful completion of the LANTITE test is a graduation requirement. It is not a teacher registration requirement. LANTITE testing will be completed as part of your ITE program, usually in your first year of study.
