The Teachers Registration Board of Tasmania

is an independent statutory authority established under the Teachers Registration Act 2000.

The Board operates along similar lines to teacher regulatory bodies in other States and Territories; its main function is to register teachers working in Tasmanian Government, Catholic and independent schools. Like other professions occupying positions of trust and responsibility, teachers are required to be registered in order to practice their profession. All practicing Tasmanian school teachers must be registered by the Board.

A registered teacher will:

  • have appropriate teaching qualifications
  • be of good character and be fit to teach
  • observe a code of professional ethics
  • continue to participate in professional learning to build knowledge, skill and competence.

Teacher registration promotes community confidence in the work of Tasmanian teachers and validates registered teachers as highly skilled professionals.

About the Teachers Registration Board

The functions of the Teachers Registration Board are set out in the Teachers Registration Act 2000. These functions govern Board actions and activities.  See the functions of the Board.

The Board meets regularly throughout the year. One of the key activities undertaken at each meeting is the approval of teacher registration for new applicants, those renewing registration or reapplying for registration and those seeking LATs.

The Board also spends time at each meeting discussing the various projects listed in the Strategic Plan, the impact and implication of national registration and education agendas and priorities and special events like the celebration of World Teachers Day or similar.

The Board also deals with any complaints or notifications of teacher misconduct and/or incompetence that it receives. This can involve a discussion, assessing documentation and/or conducting a formal inquiry. This aspect of Board activity is subject to strictest confidentiality with information only available to immediate Board members and those individuals personally involved.

The Board’s Strategic Plan is available for viewing, as are Notes from each Board meeting. These notes provide information on Board activities not bound by confidentiality requirements and are updated by the Chief Executive Officer after each meeting.
