Celebrating the Teaching Profession
World Teachers' Day
30th October 2009
World Teachers' Day (WTD) was inaugurated by UNESCO in 1994 to
focus attention on the extraordinary contributions and
achievements of teachers. The day is celebrated
internationally on October 5, the day in 1966 on which a
joint UNESCO/ILO conference adopted a recommendation on the Status of Teachers.
In Australia, World Teachers' Day is held on the last Friday in
October, this year it falls on Friday the 30th October 2009.
Click here to read the WTD message from Her Excellency Ms Quentin Bryce AC,
Governor-General
of the Commonwealth of Australia.

What will the Board be doing to
celebrate World Teachers Day?
The
Board will be hosting a celebration for teachers who have moved from
provisional registration to full registration over the last 12 months. These
teachers have all successfully provided evidence of their competence against
the Professional Teaching Standards Framework. The celebration will be held
on Thursday 29 October at 4:30 p.m. in Parliament House.

Flickr
comes to the TRB on World Teachers Day
In previous years the Board has
conducted a poster competition as part of World Teachers Day. This year the
Board is going 'high tech' and is launching into
flickr. Schools are invited
to send photos into the Board via email or phone during the week of WTD. On
World Teachers Day these photos will be loaded up onto a
flickr site
accessed through the Board's website. Schools will be able to play the
photos on
flickr
and see what is happening in classrooms and schools all
around Tasmania.

Tasmanian Catholic Schools Parents & Friends Federation Partnership
Forum
The Tasmanian
Catholic Schools Parents & Friends Federation (TCSPFF) will be
holding a Partnership Forum with the Tasmanian Catholic Education
Office and the Tasmanian Archbishop on World Teachers' Day. This
forum will the support the development of the Tasmanian Catholic
FAMILY-SCHOOL-PARISH PARTNERSHIPS framework, using the
Family-School & Community Partnerships Bureau's framework, first
developed by the
Australian Parent Council in 2006.
The TCSPFF
believes that parents need to be more involved in their children's
education, supporting teachers in more tangable ways. As the
research shows, families that are involved with their schools have
children that are engaged in their own learning. The partnership
framework is the first step in helping schools, parishes and
families understand their rights and responsibilities to that all
can be equal partners in their children's development. The flow on
positive effects for teachers will hopefully be reflected in student
behaviour and engagement.

Local Councils recognising teacher
contributions
The
Kingborough Council and Derwent Valley Council recently sent
a letter to all schools in their municipality recognising
the valuable contribution their teachers make to the lives
of children in their care.
